Astroworld is closing!

I know- anybody not in Houston probably doesn't care.... but this is a pretty major deal.... Even though the park was old and has been taken over by hoodlums and thugs.... Even though the average temperature is probably about 150 degrees out there... Even though I haven't been in quite a few years... I can't believe they are shutting it down. I have some good memories from there... I saw Heart there... I dropped a zippo from the cable cars and almost hit some guy with it (accident)... I rode the Batman roller coaster about 40 times in a row one evening when the park was almost empty... I almost died the first time I ever rode Greased Lightning when I prevented the lap bar from coming down all the way.... I slipped out and luckily the guy in front of me caught me... Anyway.... It'll stay open until Oct 30 and then it's done... Getting sold off to developers so they can turn it into condos or something.... Oh well.... I guess it was fun while it lasted....

I read somewhere that the whole six flags operation was for sale and astroworld was caught up in some of that.

All my granchildren had their first roller coaster ride there -- and I got to share it with almost all of them. Astroworld's best feature was its size, small enough to walk around all day and not get totally exhausted. Its worst feature was also its size, too small to add rides without tearing others down. But it has the greatest carousel and the two best roller coasters -- the Viper & the Cyclone -- that I have ever ridden.
Six Flags Corp. has $2 billion in debt -- they figure it will sell for $100 - $145 M -- this still leaves a whole lot of debt and us with no amusement park. I can only pray that someone will buy some land farther out, buy the good rides, and rebuild it.

I was bummed out by that too =0(
What great memories I have had there! I'm going to miss that place.
But, on a brighter note, they are opening up a Schlitterbahn in Galveston next summer! WHEEEE!
