Ummmmmm.... yeah... right... OK.... Whatever....
No Star Wars: Episode III _ Revenge of the Sith
No Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Not even the Dukes of Hazzard....
(I chose the above three because they are 3 of the 4 I actually went and saw last year- The other was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
Let's see... Crash was the 65th biggest moneymaker of the year... Brokeback Mountain came in at #74... Munich #99... Good Night, and Good Luck #115... Capote #143...
These came in well behind such great hits as Herbie: Fully Loaded #28, Bewitched #32 & Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous #46.
Is it any wonder why box office receipts are way down? They insist the crap that nobody wants to see is worthy of awards and praise, and they totally ignore what people actually want.
Hey Hollywood... Go check what sells sometime... It ain't the crap ya'll are trying to shove down our throats, that's for sure.

*sigh* i know what you mean... it used to be, i'd be torn about which movie to root for, now... i've never even heard of Capote and wouldn't even know about Munich and Good Night if i didn't watch its trailers over the internet.

I can't even believe you mentioned the Dukes of Hazzard in the same post as academy awards. That is just..wrong. Jessica Simpson and that jackass dude are simply from the devil... :)

In general I agree with you but...the purpose of the Oscars is twofold.
First, purely advertising, to get people to buy tickets to movies they might otherwise not see. As a result the most successful movies can almost never win, because you've already heard of them.
Second, a sense of superiority. It's not the fault of the academy that you are so stupid as not to understand the brilliance of the movies they selected. This way they get to enjoy how much more enlightened they are than you.
Besides, the last truly great movie was Buckaroo Bonzai.
