It's just the Internet....

I can be an asshole to anybody I want! I can insult people for grins! I can make it a point to seek out people who are having fun and try to ruin it for them. I can be a troll. I can attack people on thier blogs! I can say anything I want about anybody... It's just the Internet! There aren't real people with real feelings out their... It's just computers- just 1's and 0's... ----------------------------------------- It's kind of sad really... There are folks out there who think like that. Folks who don't seem to care one way or another who they upset, who they hurt, what damage they may cause. They will always be there.... You can choose to jump in with them, or ignore them.... I usually ignore them.... Sometimes, it's fun to get in a flame war for awhile.... But it gets old fairly quickly. Things break down to grade school level, and any hope of seeing intelligent conversation gets lost. Anyway... none of the stuff above is my point. My point is... It's not "just the Internet"... Well... I guess it could be... But if you look a little deeper... you realize that there are real people behind the keyboards... real people who you can benefit from knowing. I have a perfect example. I met my wife online. I took a chance and actually went across the country to meet somebody who was "just on the Internet", and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Just a little piece of advise... don't be a prick just for the sake of being a prick... You never know when the person you look at as just an anonymous bunch of bits and bytes might be the person who turns your life around..... And now for something completely different....

I have to agree with you I met my husband online as well :D There are ppl in this world that not just on the internet choose to destroy anything in their path so it doesn't matter whether they are online or irl, it's all the same to them.

Have you been reading the craigslist forums or something? I think there is a segment of people on the net that think it's cool to be as snarky and mean as they can be. They find it amusing to insult people and they like to find targets and band together to attack like a school of sharks. It's really pathetic but you gotta believe that these internet bullies are the people that sit at home and wonder why they have no friends.

great post, guppy. i've known lots of people who've met incredible folks in real life ... not just as 1s and 0s online. and, try as we might, it's not always possible to shake off insults hurled via your blog or a chat room or email ... or face to face, either.

oh ... and that video was frickin' hysterical!!!! :D

Internet bullies and trolls are usually sad lonely little people in real life. I think most of them subscribe to the even negative attention is attention theory.

I sat for a while to consider how I wanted to comment to this post, and I have to just reiterate Ken's comment above. Your wisdom, insight, and reminder to everyone that real people are on the other side of the screen are all greatly appreciated. Thank you for this truly insightful post. And congratulations on meeting such a truly splendid woman online.

Darn those inconsiderate, selfish, pricks; who just insults people for grins; makes it a point to seek out people who are having fun and try to ruin it for them; and say anything they want about anybody...
